BOTOX® works by relaxing the underlying muscles of the face, in turn lessening the contraction of the overlaying skin and appearance of dynamic wrinkles.

Within 3 to 4 days, you may see a marked improvement in the moderate-to-severe frown lines between your brows. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to 3 months. Individual results may vary.

BOTOX® administration is associated with minimal discomfort (“butterfly-like kiss”) which is quite brief. Prior to injection, Dr. John Mesa may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or topical anesthetic cream.

Practitioners like a med spa and other doctors who are not formally residency-trained in the administration of BOTOX® injections have been found to suffer a much higher rate of complications, as it’s a side interest to them, and not a treatment they’re certified to do all day long. One of the most common complaints is over treatment, with too much BOTOX® being injected into the skin, resulting in drooping eyelids, sagging brows, or a frozen forehead.

The most common side effect of BOTOX® is mild bruising at the injection site. This happens occasionally due to the nature of the injection process and usually fades within a few days. Other side effects are rare and typically very temporary—these may include slight redness, mild headaches, or, in very uncommon cases, temporary eyelid drooping or minor facial asymmetry. Choosing a highly trained and experienced physician greatly reduces the chances of complications.

There is little to no downtime after BOTOX® injections. Most patients return to their normal activities right away. To minimize the risk of bruising, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and touching the treated areas for the first 24 hours. It’s also important to refrain from taking over-the-counter medications that can thin the blood—such as ibuprofen (Advil), Motrin, Aleve, and aspirin-containing products like Excedrin—as these can increase the likelihood of bruising.
